Raag Gauree – Gauri Sukhmani M.5. Astpadhi 4, pada no 8.

Astpadhi 4 tells us about man’s terrible spiritual decline.
He was created as a human being; but look at his (inner spiritual) appearance now.

“Kavan mool te kavan dhristani.”

He gave you hands, feet, ears, eyes and tongue; yet, you forsake Him and attached your gratitude to others?

“Dinne hastt paoo karan netar rasna; Tusay tyaag avar sang rachna”

He Protects you from the beginning to the very end; yet the fool does give his love to the Lord.

“Aad antt jo Rakhanhar; Tis seyo preet na kare gavaar.”

He struggles for what he must leave and go; his True Helper, he forsakes.

“Chodh jayeh tis ka sram kare; sang sahayee Tis parharey.”

Outwardly he shows wisdom meditation and purity; inside him he clings to the dog of greed.

“Bahar gyan dhyan isnaan; antar biapey lobh suaan”

How can the (spiritual) cripple climb the mountain (towards Union with God); he just does not have the ability to do so.

“Keh pinggal parbat par bhavan; nahi hote uhaa uss gavan.”

To top it all, he is infused with the karmic baggage of many lifetimes.
Hate, conflict, lust, anger, attachments; lies, corruption, greed, deceit; Nanak says, Lord, only You can save me by showering Your Mercy .

Bairr birodh kaam krodh moh; jhuth bikaar maha lobh dhroh; eiahu jugat bihane kayee janam; Nanak rakh levho aapan kar karam.”

It is after this assessment of the sorry state of man, that the final pada (8) appears as an ardas.

You are our Lord and Master; our prayer is to You; this body are soul are Your property; You are our Father and Mother and we, Your children; it is only in Your Grace there are so many joys; no one knows Your Limits; You are the Highest of the High, Most Generous God.

“Tu Thakur Tum peh ardas; jio pind sabh Teri raas; Tum Maat Pita ham barak Tere; Tumri kirpa me sukh ghanerey; koye na jaane Tumra antt; Uche te Uchaa Bhagvant.”

The entire Creation is strung on Your Thread (of Your Hukam) ; that which comes from You has to follow Your Command; Only You know Your State and Extent; servant Nanak is always a sacrifice unto You.

“Saggal samagree Tumre Sutar dharee; Tum te hoye so aagiakaree; Tumri gatt mitt Tumhi jaanee; Nanak daas sada kurbanee.”
